Brain aneurysms are balloon like outpouchings of blood vessels in brain. These are ‘ticking time bombs’ which can rupture and cause catastrophic brain bleed (subarachnoid haemorrhage). If not treated, this can be life-threatening. This old lady and her daughter travelled all the way from Mauritius to Manipal Hospital, Pune to get treatment for aneurysms in brain. The lady had subarachnoid haemorrhage with built up of fluid inside brain (hydrocephalus). Our team promptly put a VP shunt and relieved the pressure inside the brain. Cerebral angiography showed large multilobulated aneurysms from both the major arteries supplying brain (internal carotid arteries). It was not possible to treat them just by simple coiling procedure because of wide neck at origin. So we used special stents called Flow Diverter which divert the blood flow away from the aneurysm causing obliteration of the aneurysm. The procedure was challenging due to dysplastic arteries and as both sides needed to be treated. She had come here with so much fear and uncertainty about her life, but she went smiling, courtesy the efforts of our entire team. It was heartening to see her walk by herself in my OPD and request for a photograph with me just before leaving back to her country.
